Home laundry is one of those everyday tasks that many people take for granted. You might think it’s just a matter of “throwing the clothes into the washing machine,” and you’re done—or are you? The truth is that home laundry is not only time-consuming but can also be costly when you consider all the hidden factors. In this article, we’ll explore how much time and money washing, ironing, and folding takes for singles, young couples, or a family of four.
Time Requirement – More Than Just Pushing a Button
Singles
According to an average estimate, singles usually need 1–2 washes per week, which amounts to about 5–6 kg of clothes. Additionally, you can count one wash per week for household textiles (bed linen, curtains, kitchen towels, etc.)—since bed linen is recommended to be washed weekly. For women, due to the variety of fabrics and colors, this can even mean 4–5 loads.
Since you already know you’ll be washing, there’s no need to check pockets. On top of that:
- Sorting and stain treatment: about 15 minutes
- Washing (depending on machine program): 1–2 hours
- Hanging clothes to dry: 10–15 minutes
- Ironing and folding after drying: 30–60 minutes (with ironing, total 2–3 hours)
So, actively doing the laundry takes 1–2.5 hours per week, which adds up to 4–10 hours per month.
Important! We included the washing time here because women usually don’t just leave the laundry running—they tend to schedule the machine in advance so they can remove the clothes fresh, or use that time to do other useful household chores.
Young Couple
For a young couple, the weekly laundry typically includes 2–3 loads of clothing and at least 1 load of household textiles, with the time required increasing accordingly:
- Sorting and stain treatment: about 15 minutes
- Washing (depending on machine program): 2–4 hours
- Hanging clothes to dry: 20–30 minutes
- Ironing and folding: 1–3 hours
In total, a young couple spends 3–4.5 hours per week on laundry, which amounts to 12–18 hours per month.
Young couple
For a family with two adults and two children, the weekly laundry typically includes 5–6 loads of clothing and at least 2 loads of household textiles, making the time requirement quite significant:
- Sorting: 20–40 minutes (for a family, every pocket needs checking, and stain treatment takes longer)
- Washing: 5–6 hours
- Hanging to dry: 40–50 minutes
- Ironing and folding: 3–4 hours
In total, laundry and related tasks can take 8–10 hours per week, which adds up to 32–40 hours per month.
Costs – The Hidden Expenses of Doing Laundry
Direct Costs of a Single Wash
Water and electricity consumption: A typical wash costs around 120–200 HUF (for water and heating).
Detergent and fabric softener: Approximately 100–200 HUF per load.
Machine depreciation: Over the lifespan of a washing machine, this amounts to about 50–100 HUF per load.
On average, a single wash costs 300–500 HUF, which translates to weekly expenses of:
Singles: 600–2,000 HUF per week (for 1–2 washes)
Young couples: 1,200–4,000 HUF per week
Families: 4,000–8,000 HUF per week
These are additional costs on top of other household expenses.
The Value of Time
We should also consider the monetary value of our time. For example, if your net hourly wage is 4,000 HUF, a single person spends the equivalent of 16,000–40,000 HUF per month on laundry, while a family member (typically the mother) can “wash away” as much as 128,000–160,000 HUF of their time.
